Raimundas Malašauskas: Solo (Always the Last to Know)
13 November, 18:00
Continuing the Lineage programme, we invite you to a meeting with curator Raimundas Malašauskas. In the talk he will introduce a cast of characters from his artistic and curatorial practice: figures through whom thoughts, stories and ways of thinking travel, passing from one artist to another, and from one artwork to the next.
Raimundas will talk about:
Suzon – the barmaid in Édouard Manet’s painting A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, known only by her first name.
Soromimi – a character who never quite disappears, even after the book is closed.
Bucky Wonka – a character from the libretto Cellar Door, written together with Aaron Schuster for a work by Loris Gréaud.
Mardi – an almost-human inhabitant of Repetition Island (Centre Pompidou, 2010), recreated each day by a different writer or artist.
Ali Bi – the narrator of the text The Solitude of the Simultaneity, longing to be in several places and times at once.
Sam – an eighty-year-old writer from Peter Ustinov’s play Photo Finish, visited by a younger versions of himself.
Dixie Evans – the “Marilyn Monroe of burlesque”.
Edith Scob – the actress whose face is concealed by a mask in the film Eyes Without a Face.
Clifford Irving – the author of a forged autobiography of Howard Hughes.
John Fare – a performance artist who, according to accounts, disassembled himself piece by piece in front of an audience.
Horace Goldin – a Vilnius-born illusionist known for his trick in which a woman was sawn in half.
To open the conversation, a dream about Raimundas, recounted by Elena Narbutaitė:
“I have to tell you today, because it expires tomorrow.
Last night I dreamt that you were organising not an exhibition, but a whole series of gatherings, in about four different places at once. You also had two faces that you kept switching between. Everyone I met in that dream had incredible stories to tell, and all the conversations were fascinating. It seemed that the topics of one conversation would suggest the locations for other meetings.”
